Tips on Giving Wisely

The following information is intended to guide you as you consider ways to impact your community through charitable giving.  The Community Foundation staff is available to discuss this information and help you achieve your philanthropic goals.

Budget for giving and be a proactive giver
Include your philanthropic activities in your family budget just as you would other financial obligations. You don’t have to wait to be asked. Plan a giving strategy in advance. Consult with a staff member about how your gifts can be most effectively used and where you can make a real difference in the community.

Be an informed giver
Don’t be afraid to ask questions when you’re asked to give. Ask for the specific name of the solicitor and his or her relationship to the organization, how much of your gift will be used for overhead expenses, and the specific projects toward which your gift will be allocated.  Give only when you feel comfortable that your dollars will be supporting an organization you trust.

Keep the right records
Gifts you make to your charitable fund at the Community Foundation will be recorded on a properly- worded receipt that will be mailed to you as a confirmation of your tax-deductible contributions. Gifts made from your fund will not be recognized with a tax receipt, as you have already received the deduction for the original gift. (You will, however, receive written confirmation that the grant has been made as requested.)

Ask about matching gifts
Many employers match gifts made by their employees, or make grants to organizations recommended by employees. Be sure to ask your company if it can help stretch your gift even further.

Your gift can be confidential
If you prefer to have gifts from your charitable fund remain confidential, please let the Community Foundation know.

Consider alternative forms of giving
Don’t overlook the benefits you and your cause can receive from bequests, charitable gift annuities, gifts in kind, endowments and many other creative types of giving. Ask your tax advisor or attorney to help create the best plan for you and your family.
