A community foundation is an independent philanthropic organization working in a specific geographic area which manages a collection of endowed funds from many donors in the community. These organizations provide services to their community and donors, make grants, and undertake community leadership and partnership activities to address a wide variety of needs in their service areas. There are more than 700 community foundations nationwide, many of which date back to the early 1900s. Collectively, community foundations manage more than $40 billion in charitable assets.
The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado was established in 1975 by a committee of community leaders. Today, the Foundation is a collection of more than 240 charitable funds and approximately $35 million in assets. With the support of generous donors, dedicated staff and board members, CFNC is building a dynamic community foundation to help maintain and improve upon the extraordinary quality of life the Northern Colorado region has to offer.

Build a better community by promoting philanthropy through creative donor services. The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado does this by:
- Being a leader for positive change
- Excelling at donor services
- Connecting resources to the needs of the community
- Providing leadership on critical community issues
- Building Relationships
The Community Foundation has a proud history of service to the Northern Colorado region. It was founded in 1975 as a mechanism for the creation of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts – a facility that has touched the lives of countless people of all ages. Through the years, the Foundation’s mission and vision have been modified to better serve the community.
- When Fort Collins suffered a devastating flood, the Foundation served as the vehicle for receiving and dispersing charitable gifts to those in need.
- Following the national tragedy of September 11, 2001, the Foundation again became the clearing house for our community’s charitable response.
- When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, the Community Foundation helped hand-deliver funds to grassroots organizations that needed it most; thanks to the Bohemian Foundation's dollar-for dollar match, more than $2 million was provided for hurricane relief in the Gulf Coast region.
In addition, each spring the Community Foundation hosts an Annual Luncheon where community residents gather to celebrate local philanthropy. These luncheons have featured such speakers as Hank Brown, Pat Stryker, Denver Mayor Hickenlooper, and CSU President Larry Penley.
With a thirty-one year history of service to the region, the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado is now positioned to move forward in unprecedented fashion. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees and its four Community Fund Committees are working together to ensure a bright future for Larimer County. The four primary communities we serve (Fort Collins, Loveland, Estes Park and Berthoud) have united with a common purpose. An exciting donor-focused vision has been established, management fees have been reduced, and in December 2005 the Foundation began occupying its new building in southeast Fort Collins. In addition, the Community Foundation is increasingly becoming a convener and facilitator for important community issues.
